5 absolute things to do in Amritsar

Looking for things to do in Amritsar besides visiting the Golden Temple? I've got some great ideas for you. Turbans of every colour of the rainbow line the streets of Amritsar, the holy city that is home to the internationally renowned Golden Temple.

This is the holiest Gurudwara (temple) of Sikh religious worship, known locally as Sri Harimandir Sahib in Amritsar. This is due to the fact that it houses the Adi Granth, the holy scriptures of the Sikh faith.

People travel from all over the world to Amritsar just to catch a glimpse of and walk inside this gleaming temple, which r
eceives over 100,000 visitors per day. I could see why when I finally got to visit this year. It was absolutely breathtaking.

Stroll around and listen to the peaceful melodies of the Golden Temple

The Golden Temple is one of the most famous Sikh temples in the world and amritsar, and some say that if you haven't been here, you haven't visited India. I went to the Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in Delhi, but it was nothing compared to the 750 kilos of pure gold staring back at me!I almost felt like I was in a trance as I walked around the marble floors, listening to the holy scriptures.People perform live music and sing in the temple at all hours of the day. It truly sends a sort of contentment through your whole body. This makes your Amritsar journey full and surreal.

Go shopping in the main market square

Around the temples, there are some fantastic markets to sink your teeth into if you’re the shopping type. These markets are an open exhibition of punjabi culture in amritsar

Beyond the typical ‘Golden Temple’ souvenirs there are some really pretty Punjabi scarves and pashminas and textiles in all different beautiful patterns. For me, I did actually buy a little golden temple magnet to mark the occasion of visiting amritsar. One day, I want a fridge full of magnets representing all the places I’ve been. So, this had to be one!

Visit the Wagah Border near Pakistan borders to witness the closing of the flag ceremony.

This was an incredible show that I would recommend to any tourist visiting Amritsar. It is located on the Pakistani border, approximately 40 kilometres from Amritsar.

It's essentially a flag-lowering ceremony in which the armies from both sides of the border meet in the middle and perform for the crowds. To the applause, the army members will spin, kick, and march. You will need to leave early to beat the crowds and secure a seat.

When the gate becomes overcrowded, they begin to close it. A taxi would be preferable to a rickshaw.

Sample the famous Punjabi food in one of the many Dhaba’s

Amritsar and Punjab are famous for their finger licking delicious food. I was recommended to try Brother’s Dhaba which was nearby the Golden Temple. The food was cheap, the service was fast and it was amazingly tasty! I ordered saag along with a Roti. You can also try the amritsari kulche which tastes like heaven and truly shows the culture of amritsar.

Visit Sadda Pind

Sadda Pind, a cultural village near Amritsar (8 km from Golden Temple).

It's essentially a living museum modelled after a traditional Punjabi village. So you'll learn about Punjabi culture, visit houses with model families, learn how to cook traditional dishes, listen to traditional music, and learn about farming culture, among other things.
