Tungnath Temple is perched on the Chandrashila Parvat in Uttarakhand's Tungnath mountain range. It stands at an intimidating height of 12,073 feet. Tungnath Temple is a heavenly abode that literally translates to "God of Mountain Before. It is not only the highest temple of Lord Shiva, but also the highest of the PanchKedar temples, and it is set against the most beautiful backdrop.

Starting point of Tungnath: Chopta

The lovely Chopta Meadow is located at an elevation of 8,556 feet in the lush evergreen forest area of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a small region located 29 kilometres from Ukhimath. Chopta village, also known as the "Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand," is an unspoiled hamlet in the Uttarakhand Himalayas with breathtaking views of majestic peaks such as Trishul, Chaukhamba, and Nanda Devi.


Chopta village is surrounded by nature, from the forest of pine, deodar, and rhododendron to the chirping of rare bird species and the animals from the wildlife sanctuary. Chopta will captivate you with its beauty. As a starting point for Tungnath, it is the best one to start your trip. 


About Tungnath Temple

The Tungnath temple, also known as Tunganth Mahadev, is thought to be over 1000 years old. Adi Shankaracharya is said to have discovered the temple. The temple is Lord Shiva's abode and houses his beautiful idol. This temple is also home to the idols of Goddess Parvati and numerous other Gods. Due to the harsh winters, Lord Shiva's idol is moved to his nearby winter abode, Mukkumath Temple, during the winter season.


Tungnath temple's artistic architecture and enchanting location draw hordes of tourists to this majestic abode of God.


Tungnath temple is best visited in conjunction with the Chopta-Chandrashila trek, which also includes a visit to the high-altitude glacial lake known as Deoria Tal.


Tungnath Summit: Chandrashila Peak

Chandrashila meaning the "moonrock" is the summit or the endpoint for the Tungnath Mahadev Trek. The allure of Chandrashila peak is 13,000 feet above sea level. There are numerous legends surrounding Chandrashila. According to legend, Lord Rama meditated at this peak after defeating Ravana. It is also believed that Lakshman, Lord Rama's younger brother, meditated at the Chandrashila Temple.


Another legend that contributes to Chandrashila Peak's uniqueness is that Chandra, the god of the moon, stayed here in self-abasement.


To reach the spellbinding temple, the trek route to Chopta Chandrashila passes through lush meadows, quaint hamlets, and thickets of forest. The trek continues to Chandrashila Peak, which requires a 1.5-kilometer steep hike from the trailhead.
